SCHOOLS

"If it was a meal, it would have been juicy, tasty and delicious". Child at school describing their session.

I have worked with dozens of children in schools in Gloucestershire. The children I work with may need extra support for a variety of reasons, including loss, trauma, confusion, difficulties with relationships, lack of confidence, neuro-diverse diagnoses. Through the art, the children are able to express themselves in a novel way which can provide focus, relief, time out from the classroom environment, a potential understanding of own complex emotions, and build confidence/self esteem in a safe and consistent space. The one-to-one session is also enormously beneficial to a child or young person who finds the structure of a school setting difficult.

I typically work with each child for 25-30 minutes once a week, and provide a range of art materials from which the child can choose each time, such as clay, paints, pastels, crayons, pens, pencils, charcoal, collage materials. This ensures that each child can express themselves in a way that is useful to them, depending on how they are feeling each week.

"It's like throwing your mind onto a piece of paper" Child in school, in an individual session.

A class teacher noted "an immediate effect of better focus after the sessions, with less disruptive behaviour and an increased willingness to apply themselves to their work - which benefits the class as a whole". Parents have been grateful for the time spent with their children and I have received comments about how children are easier to communicate with and happier at home. The children I have worked with all enjoy their time and appear to benefit greatly from, and look forward to each session. One-to-one or small group work can be incredibly useful to children in school and the creativity has a powerful effect.
